Northstar Capital is a one-person systematic investment business. It researches, builds and operates rules-based strategies, and it is run the way a small engineering team would run a production system: every decision written down, every result reproducible, every live number checked against its simulation.
What this site is
The Knowledge Centre is a series of technical notes on the craft of running a systematic fund: the public research a strategy rests on, and the engineering and operating practices that keep one honest once it trades. They are written for people who want to start a similar business, and they cover what we would have wanted to read at the beginning.
What this site is not
It is not an offer of any investment, and it does not publish returns, positions or the rules of any strategy. There are no client accounts; the sign-in page is for the operator’s own tools. Nothing here is investment advice, and the notes are general by design: an idea that suits one portfolio can be wrong for another.
The name
The pole star holds still while the rest of the night sky turns around it, which is why navigators have steered by it for centuries. That is what a systematic process is for: rules fixed in advance that hold steady when markets, and the person running them, do not.
How the notes are written
- Claims about the literature cite the primary source and paraphrase it; the reference list gives full details.
- Where evidence is mixed or an effect has faded, the note says so.
- Worked examples and figures use synthetic data or pure arithmetic.
- Notes are numbered and revised in place, with the revision month shown at the top.
